Yoga has a long history in India. But the history of International Yoga Day is not very old. In the year 2014, PM Narendra Modi took the initiative in the United Nations General Assembly. On 11 December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly passed this resolution with an absolute majority. Out of 193 member countries, 177 members approved the proposal to celebrate June 21 as International Yoga Day by voice vote.

When was the first International Yoga Day celebrated?
After the approval of the United Nations General Assembly, on 21 June 2015, International Yoga Day was organized in a grand manner all over the world. Under the leadership of PM Modi, more than 35 thousand people and representatives of 84 countries did 21 asanas of yoga at Rajpath in Delhi.

June 21 is the longest day of the Northern Hemisphere, also known as the summer solstice. According to Indian tradition, the sun turns south after the summer solstice.
